Storyboard Text

  • After the Civil War, the nation needed to be put back together.
  • So I, Abraham Lincoln made the 10% plan. It was very lenient as it called for only 10% of southern men to swear loyalty before the South would be readmitted.
  • Northern troops invaded the South to enforce the CRA of 1866.
  • Congress was filled with Radical Republicans that wanted to punish the South. Their plan called for 50% of Southern men to swear loyalty before the South would be readmitted.
  • Black codes were passed in many places to keep AAs as close to slavery as possible.
  • The Civil Rights Act of 1866 was passed by Congress in reaction to Black Codes. It said that AAs were to enjoy equal rights with the rest of U.S citizens.
  • Jim Crow laws segregated Blacks and Whites.
  • The Freedmen's Bureau was established to help former slaves through education and housing aid.
  • The KKK rose up to scare and intimidate AAs.
  • The 14th amendment granted citizen ship to former slaves.
  • The 13th amendment ended slavery!
  • The 15th amendment gave voting rights for AA men! YAY!
  • Reconstruction ended with a compromise to settle the election of 1876. The last Union soldier left in 1877.
