Nicolae Ceausescu ruled his regime with an iron fist. He and his wife set up a very authoritarian government. They tried to use their secret police to enforce their policies. This however did not stop the opposition, in fact it made it worse.
Ceausescu's economic policies had harsh repercussions on his countries living standards. There was a massive food shortage in Romania. Goods such as bread, flour, and sugar had to be rationed. His next policy included bulldozing villages. This made people even more angry.
There was one incident in all of this that was the spark that started a rebellion. This occurred in December of 1989 when his secret police performed a government mandated massacre of people who were simply peacefully protesting.
