Althea Gibson was born in Silver City South Carolina on August 25,1927. Gibson died from a stroke and her heart problems got serious. Gibson died in 2003 from breathing problems in East Orange New Jersey. Althea Gibson had success and worked her way to attend a school on a sports scholarship. Gibson was thinking about leaving sports and to join the US army.
Althea Gibson won some of the sport’s biggest tennis awards in the 1950s. After losing one award in 1946 Gibson won 10 straight championships from 1947-1956. Gibson was chosen to be in the 1971 tennis hall of fame.
Althea Gibson was a professional athlete ,and she continued to win. Gibson was reported to pay $100,00 to play in matches. Gibson was a member of a council on physical fitness. Gibson made history and became the first african american invited to play in Wimbledon.
