  • Oedipus' fatal flaw is that it is his destiny since birth to marry his mother. This eventually leads to his downfall because when his mother/wife discovers this, she commits suicide, which causes Oedipus to gouge his own eyes out in grief.

  • Jocasta is my mother?!
  • Oedipus acts arrogant and abuses his power as king by bossing people around until he gets his way and threatening to put people to death if they do not do what he says.
  • nemesis
  • You murdered Laius!
  • A sudden change of fortune is when it is discovered that Oedipus killed Laius. Oedipus thought that he had escaped his fate when his adoptive father died of natural causes, but then it is revealed that Laius is his real father.
  • catharsis
  • Oedipus discovers his true identity when it is revealed that his wife, Jocasta, is also his birth mother.
  • Oedipus' nemesis could be considered Creon because he accuses Oedipus of murdering Laius. This angers Oedipus and he almost decides to put Creon to death.
  • When Oedipus finds Jocasta dead, he releases his emotions by gouging his eyes out because he cannot bear to see the sight of his dead wife.
