Direct democracy isn't lead by a council. They all have right's to vote. All except women. Only men over the age of 18 and born in Athen and as long at you weren't a helot.
The Differences between Direct democracy, and Representative democracy : Some differences between the two city states Are that they each have their own style of Democracy . Sparta (on the right) allows women to vote and Athens (on the left) doesn't allow women to vote.
Representative Democracy is lead by a group of people called a council. This council decides for the city state, although there still able to vote. Women and men were both aloud to vote.
Why athens chose Direct Democracy!
The reason Ancient Athens chose Direct Democracy is because they believed that men could only have rights. They also believed that everyone could vote except women and helots of course.
They chose representative democracy so everyone had the right to vote. Even women. could vote
