The death of Thomas Becket
The church had more authority over the people than Henry. He of course did not like this so decided to make a plan so he could have more power.
Thinking it would give him more power he made his friend Thomas becket in charge of the church after the archbishop died but becket sided with the church and became very powerful.
the knights went to Canterbury cathedral after they had heard this wanting to please their king. they killed Becket by the Alter.
Henry demanded Becket that he had to allow priests and monks to be trialled in the king's court but Becket refused and fled the country for five years.
"will someone rid me of this troublesome priest" Henry exclaimed when Becket returned in 1170 and excommunicated 3 bishops.
Later after his death he became a saint. Henry to show his remorse he walked bare foot to Canterbury Cathedral and let the monks whip him for his crime. The church said they would forgive him if he gave land and money to the church.
