Three rioters are at a tavern and see a corpse in a coffin pass by. Upon seeing this, they inquire whose body it is; a young serving boy tells them it is one of their friends. The boy then says it is a thief named Death that took his life.
The men vow to kill the traitor named Death and set off to a village to find him. After they walk for about half a mile they meet an old man and wonder is it not his time to die.
The old man says not even Death will take his life. The men are shocked to hear this and demand he tells them where Death is found. The old man points to a grove and says he left Death under the oak tree there today. So, they continue their journey.
When the men get to the tree they find a pile of gold florins; they are so ecstatic to find such a fortune they forget Death. They draw lots and the youngest goes to the village to buy them bread and wine. While he is gone, the two men waiting decide to stab him in the back upon his return, so they can have more gold to themselves.
As the man makes his way into the village, he has the same thought of greed as the others. He decides to buy poison and put it in the wine for the other men and give himself clean wine.
When the man returns the other two kill him as planned. To celebrate they drink the wine, and they both die too.
