  • John, you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) which is a chronic condition affecting your large intestine that is made up of multiple symptoms that occur at the same time. These include bloating, gas, cramping, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation.
  • The cause of IBS isn't 100% known. The lined, muscular walls of your intestines that contract to move your food through could have stronger contractions than normal causing the bloating and diarrhea or they could have weaker contractions causing constipation. Risk factors include being young, female, having IBS in your family history, and mental health illnesses.
  • Complications of IBS include hemorrhoids which are aggravated by diarrhea and constipation. The most prominent complication is a lower quality of life due to the inability to enjoy food. Prevention of IBS is not possible due to the cause being unknown.
  • I can perform a physical examination and blood test on you in order to diagnose you with IBS. The anatomy and physiology of IBS is uncertain due to the mystery of what really causes this disease but the disease mainly affects the GI tract.
  • The prognosis of IBS is chronic discomfort. This disease does not have direct treatment, however factors such as diet and exercise can help with IBS symptoms.
  • IBS is the most common functional GI disorder. Prevalence rates worldwide range from 10-15%, with 40% cases being mild, 35% of cases being moderate, and 25% being severe. Good luck with your IBS John!
