  • SETTING
  • EXPOSITION
  • "It's so dark" he thought, "that I could sleep without closing my eyes; the night would be my eyelids." (Connell 20)
  • RISING ACTION
  • "I hunt the scum on this earth: sailors from tramp ships, lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels" (Connell 27)
  • The two settings are Ship Trap island and Zaroff's mansion in the mid-1900's. "The old charts call it Ship Trap island, A suggestive name isn't it? Sailors have a curious dread to the place. I don't know why. Some superstition." (Connell 19)
  • CLIMAX
  • "You've done well Raisnford. But your brumes tiger pit has claimed one of my best dogs. Again you score." (Connell 33)
  • Raisford, Whitney, and their crew are traveling to Rio to hunt Jaguars when they begin to pass ship trap island. Night falls upon them and Rainsford stays out to have a smoke, then he trips up trying to save his pipe, and falls in the water. He swims to the nearby island. He stays there for one night and comes across general Zaroff and his mansion.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • Zaroff shows Rainsford the "game" he has created in order to make hunting interesting. He is hunting men. The general has a game set up to where he releases the men he captures onto the island and if they survive three days without being hunted by Zaroff, they win the game.
  • RESOLUTION
  • Rainsford insists that he wants to leave the island and Zaroff says the only way he can, is to play the game with him. Rains ford heads out on the island and tries to stay alive using traps that he makes himself.
  • One of Rainsford's traps kills Ivan and Rainsfort bolts for the sea. Raisnsford swims to Zaroff's mansion and greets him. "Swam. I found it quicker than walking through the jungle." (Connell 34)
  • Rainford had won the game. Whoever had one the fight got to sleep in an excellent bed, while the other had to take on the hounds. Rainsford had never slept on a greater bed. "I congratulate you. You have won the game." (Connell 34)
