Family based communities started to form around 4000 B.C.E. These family communities consisting of 15-20 people joined other family communities to form villages consisting of 100-200 people.
The Nok were known for making iron tools which helped many farmers clear land and grow crops more efficiently. The creation of these tools allowed them to trade with others. The city of Jenne-jeno was established where the Niger River collides with the Bani River. This was the perfect location for the people to trade, farm, and fish.
When kings conquered a territory, they would gather more people for their army. This increased the chance of the army defeating other kingdoms. The kingdom that conquered many territories soon became an empire.
