Because the British Declared any Jew that wanted to return to what is now Israel Israeli's and the native Palestinians had many conflicts.
When the Israelis expanded their territory they had the support of the British and the Americans.
There were two main Palestine opposition groups, the first of which being the PLO, they wanted to create a Palestine state, when they were first created they would have been considered terrorists, but they have become more peaceful now a days.
In 1987 a large scale uprising of Palestinians took place known as the Intifada or "shake off". The uprising was violent and the Israelis responded brutally and received flak from other countries about how they handled the situation.
During the time of Israels expansion the United States where going through the Cold War. Israel was partnered with the United States and other democracies because they shared religious and cultural ties. At this point Israel was expanding and the surrounding countries would make alliances with the Soviet Union so they could be supplied with weapons and materials.
Back in 1979 the president of Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty. Israeli troops were removed from Egypt and the two countries became peaceful. Most Arab countries did not like the agreement Egypt and Israel made.
