Dred Scott was born a slave in Virginia around 1800. His owner. Peter Blow, moved to Alabama and then to St. Louis in 1830
After Blow died in 1833, Scott was sold to Dr. John Emerson, an army surgeon.
In 1836, Emerson and his slaves moved to Wisconsin. There, Scott met and married his wife, Harriet Robinson.
After Dr. Emerson died in 1843, Emerson's wife bought ownership of the Scotts. Dred offered Emerson money for their freedom. She refused.
The Scotts sued Mrs. Emerson in 1847 and managed to bring the case to the Supreme Court. The odds were not in his favor.
Scott lost the case, and Emerson's brother, John Sanford claimed ownership of the slaves and brought them to New York where they lived the rest of their lives.
