When the Duke of Milan, Prospero, was overthrown and sentenced to execution by his brother, he and his daughter Miranda escaped to a remote island where they could not be found.
After enslaving the only native islander Caliban, Prospero started to plot his rise back to dukedom.
Prospero created a tempest with his un-worldly magic and sank the ship his brother, the now duke of Milan, was sailing on. He made sure everyone on the ship survived but he split them up so that they were spread across the island.
Caliban befriend Stephano and Trinculo, the Duke's entertainers, and planned for them to get rid of Prospero for him, so that he would once again be free.
The Duke's protectors tried to to kill him while he slept to gain the throne, but he woke up before they had the chance. He decided to search for his son, Ferdinand, because he feared he was dead.
Eventually Propero used his magic to bring everyone together. He used the Duke's son to convince him that Prospero was the rightful heir, and they sailed back to Milan, leaving the island behind.
