The narrator in prison tells us about his hatefull obsession for the eye of an old man. He wants to show us his point of view and convince us of him not being mad.
The protagonist and the old man know each other well. The only thing which disturbs him is the pale, blue eye with a film over it "The eye of a vulture"
He observs the old men for seven nights at midnight, when he is sleeping. During the eighth night the old man wakes up and does not fall asleep again. The narrator waits, then he opens the latern again and puts light upon the old man's eye.
He kills the old man because he can't stand his blue eye and the beating of the heart. He is affraid that neighbours might hear the loudly beating heart.
He dismembers the old man after he killed him with the bed. Three policemen arrive at the door, because a neighbour heared the old man´s scream. The narrator still feels safe. He invites them in.
First he shows the house very calmly but when they enter the room he hears the heartbeat and panics and succumbs to his own terror.
