In 490 BC the Persians and their general, Darius, landed on the Plain of Marathon and was ready to fight the Athenians because they were interfering with Persian empires.
When the Persians arrived they waited for the Athenians to come and attack but the Athenians knew it would be dangerous to come and attack. The Athenians stayed back overlooking the plain.
When the Persians were done waiting their commander told them to sail south and attack Athens which was a big mistake.
The first to board the ships were the horsemen and as soon as horsemen were out of sight the Greeks charged down to the plain of marathon to attack.
The Greeks caught the Persians on foot standing in the water waiting to aboard the ships first and attacked them.
Unable to defend, the Persians were defeated very easily since they put their strongest men on the ships first.
