Storyboard Text

  • Ethos Ethical Appeal
  • Summer is a senior at Black Rock High, an alternative public school for at-risk students.
  • "When my papa died he wanted my grandma to like keep us in school, that's what he wanted us to do, keep us in school, get an education and graduate," (4:00).
  • Logos Logical Appeal
  • Students drop out for many reasons... but most cite the number one reason is not having a personal relationship with a caring adult.
  • "I'm just going to try to help out my grandma right now." "Okay and and I appreciate that and I know that your grandma needs all the help she can get, it concerns me a little bit now because Summer you are a very talented artist I mean you're talented beyond black rock you're talented beyond this community it's important for you to go out and be challenged and taught by a real artist." "Yeah that's what my grandma keeps saying… she wants the best for me, but like I just feel so guilty and everything," (2:54).
  • Pathos Emotional Appeal
  • "I have two channels on my tv, I don't have a cell phone, I don't get money, I'm just happy with what I have," (1:25).
  • The text track of ethos provides credibility to the school and to Summer's education. The two students walking into school with the baby illustrates the actual conditions that this school has and how it is reliable because of how these students are really living.
  • These examples of logos are logical because anyone that was raised by a family member in a time of need would choose them over going to a school of their dreams. Also without having someone there to care for you, many people often feel alone and feel no need to work for anything.
  • The audio of pathos forces a viewer to pity and feel bad for Summer because of what she isn't given and what she doesn't have compared to most students in high school. Due to how much she has given up to help and support her family and the fact that she is so family oriented and happy with what she has, pity is released off of a viewer and introduced to a sign of compassion.
  • Summer Jordan missed her sophomore year of high school to care for her grandparents
