Jill and Bill just finished reading "O' Captain My Captain".
The captain is dead.
By Samuel Cardwell
Wow, that was an amazing poem that really made me feel what Americans must have felt after Lincoln was assassinated!
But the North had most of the population at the time, 22 million to 5.5 million. Which is 80%. And you can’t include everything in a poem.
You are forgetting that the Southerners hated Lincoln and didn’t want him as president, so it wasn’t what America felt.
Actually, in the end, some Southerners didn’t hate Lincoln, since he was making sure that the surrender was peaceful.
Whitman still should have mentioned something about the Southerners hating Lincoln.
The Richmond Whig, a southern newspaper, even said that Lincoln's death was the “heaviest blow which has fallen on the people of the south.”
You have evidence as well, not fair.
I guess your right, the poem does show what America felt after Lincoln’s assassination.
