Storyboard Text

  • It's 1821 and we're in the midst of the Second Great Awakening! Instead of looking to God for answers, people based reasoning off of science.
  • Schools now became important! There were 2 big limitations on certain people who could go to school: you had to be a boy and have money. Schools were also very religion-based.
  • Man, do we have to read the Bible?
  • Isn't the answer 4?
  • Yet, the teachers weren't exactly trained...
  • Representatives like Horace Mann advocated for free, public education.
  • Every child deserves the right education!
  • You're fired!
  • By the end of the 19th century, public schools became commonplace, and less religious.
  • Shouldn't we learn more about God?
  • Yeah, let's stick with learning our ABC's.
