General Sherman decided that he could hurt the Confederacy further by destroying industries that helped the Confederate ecomomy. He burned cotton gins, lumber mills, looted and destorying everthing that was in his path during the march.
Sherman divided up his army in four different forces durng the march to help spread out the destruction and give his troop more are to get food and supplies. Also, it helped to confuse the Confederate Army so they did not know what city he was marching to.
One of the most devastating blows to the South in the American Civil War was General Sherman's march through the state of Georgia from Atlanta to Savannah.
