  • How did the Roman Empire become one of the largest empires in history?

  • Latins began to settle the area near Rome around 1000BC
  • The early Romans raised pigs, goats, sheep, and cattle. They lived in primitive round huts, like this one.

  • Romulus was the first (mythical) King of Rome. He is credited with the founding of the Roman Senate.

  • Eventually, The settlements in the area united, probably in an attempt to fend off invaders. Eventually, Rome became a city.
  • the Carthaginians were great traders, and the Romans wanted their trading zones.
  • The main enemy of early Rome was Carthage.
  • The first Punic war, as the wars between Rome and Carthage would come to be known, was fought, after a dispute over Sicily, in 264 BC. The war ended in a Roman victory

  • Carthage was a city in modern day Tunisia.
  • The Carthaginian General Hannibal attacked the Roman City of Sagantum, starting the Second Punic War. After Hannibal's army was defeated, Carthage was forced to pay a war debt of 200 silver talents a year for fifty years 
  • After Rome tried to force Carthage to dismantle and move the city inland, Carthage refused. The third Punic war followed, ended when the city of Carthage was burned to the ground, in 146 BC. The city would lay in waste for hundreds of years.

  • After Carthage had paid their debts to Rome (by unfairly taxing its people) the Carthaginians were seen as a threat to Rome again.
