The three witches are telling Macbeth and Banquo that Macbeth will soon be the thane of Cawdor and the king.
Macbeth tells King Duncan that he is happy to be working for him. After he leaves Duncan he says to himself that Malcolm is in his way of becoming king so he plans on doing something about it and hopes no one can see what he is up to.
King Duncan is telling Macbeth that he is bestowing his son Malcolm as the prince of Cumberland, and then invites himself over to Macbeth's castle at Inverness.
Lady Macbeth is reading a letter Macbeth sent her that tells her about the three witches and how they told him that he will soon be king. She is very proud of him and wants to help him become king. She wants him to come home so she can talk him out of whatever is stopping him from fighting for the crown.
Lady Macbeth tells him to stop being such a coward and to go back to smear the blood on the servants and to return the daggers. But because he is a coward she volunteers to do it herself.
Macbeth tells Lady Macbeth that he killed Duncan and he comes back with the bloody evidence and daggers.
Macduff finds Duncan dead and tells everyone to come check out the scene. Lady Macbeth enters and pretends to faint so Macbeth and her don't look guilty.
Everyone exits except Malcolm and Donalbain. After the death of Duncan they discuss where they plan to go. Malcolm says that he doesn't feel safe there and he feels like everyone is lying. Malcolm plans on escaping to England, and Donalbain is going to head to Ireland.
