Springtime in Italy, Montresor runs into the infamous Fortunato and offers him to try out the special Amontillado, hidden in his families catacombs.
Montresor has told the reader that Fortunato has insulted him, at which Fortunato must pay. Plotting his revenge, Montresor has a chilling way to get rid of Fortunato.
Pretending to have a cask of Amontillado, Montresor lures Fortunato to his death in the far end of Montresor's family catacomb. Due to Fortunato not feeling too well, he drinks wine to ease his cough, but also makes him oblivious as to what will happen.
Fortunato finally understands that there was no wine, only a recess in the wall which fit him perfectly. Chained to the walls, Fortunato sees himself being buried behind bricks.
Drunk and crying for help, Montresor mocks him to show his cries and screaming mean nothing. Squeezing in the last few bricks, Montresor calls Fortunato's name only to hear his jester bells jingle a few times then silence.
Happy for his revenge, Montresor finishes up the wall, and replaces the bones of the crypt. After fifty years of not being caught, Montresor actually got away with murder and told his story right before he died.
