Motif: Why I'm Not Where You Are 9/11/03
Symbol: Door Knob
Symbol: The yes and no on Thomas Senior's hands
No I'm sorry, I've never seen it before.
Thomas Schell senior is standing outside of the Grandmother's house and he gave the doorman a note that says "I'm sorry." She put a note on her window saying "Don't go away" Thomas senior then decides to throw rocks at her window to get her attention, but that didn't work so he writes another note. "Do you want to see me again?" She says "Don't go away."
Motif: Oskar and the key
The door knob represents how Thomas senior was trying to get to Anna and his baby. He wanted to get to them so bad that he was going to get hurt for it. Thomas was trying to get to them during a bombing. He grabbed the burning hot door knob causing it to burn through his flesh all the way down to his bone. He kept trying to get to them even after that happened.
Thomas Schell can no longer talk so when he first lost the words Yes and No he made it easier on himself. So instead of writing down yes and no all the time all he has to do is show them his palms. This is a symbol because it shows his inability to talk and how he deals with it.
Oskar walks all over the boroughs trying to find people with the last name Black. He is trying to find them to see if they know anythinng about the key he found in his Dad's closet. Throughout his journey none of them have any clue about the key and it frustrates Oskar. He thinks that he will never figure out how his father truly died.
