Jeannette to afraid to tell her family what was going on dealt with it, until one day she did a good deed for a little black boy and was repaid by not being beat up anymore. The following days consisted of her helping those who bullied her, however this caused her racist grandmother to be furious at her claiming she is a “nigger lover”. Jeanette's parents decide to go back to Phoenix and reclaim some of their belongings leaving the children behind to stay with their grandmother. While gone the grandmother took advantage of the youngest brother, brian causing a big physical fight between Lori and her. Once the parents returned their father did not care what happened and just wanted them to stop talking, leaving the children to believe something similar happened to their father when he was younger too, explaining a lot of his character to date.
