  • President James Madison was part of the Democratic Republicans. He wanted war with Britain because of impressment which was when Britain captures people on U.S ships and takes them to be a part of their navy. Also he wanted war because of the non-stop attacks on U.S ships that were happening.
  • Phase 2 of the War of 1812: East Coast
  • Native Americans in the Northwest Territory became allies with the British and were told to fight the Americans by a Native American chief named Tecumseh. These Native Americans followed Tecumseh and were led by him. This was also one of the causes of the War of 1812.
  • Phase 3 of the War of 1812: New Orleans
  • The first 2 years of the war against Britain were mostly fought by the Navy. A man named Oliver Hazard Perry took command of the U.S navy in Lake Eerie. Him and the British fought for almost 2 hours before Perry's ship sunk but he then managed to get on another boat and defeat the British ships. The British then fled to Canada where Perry followed them and defeated them at the Battle of Thames. After this war, Britain was not a problem in the Northwest anymore.

  • Soon after the British had defeated Napoleon in 1814, Britain had put their defeating focus towards the U.S. The British then marched to Washington DC after blockading the coast. Once arriving to DC, they burned down the White House and President's mansion. A man named Francis Scott Key watched the Americans stop a British invasion at the bombarment of Ft. McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. He then wrote the "Star Spangled Banner" while watching the British and Americans fight.
  • OHHHH SAY CAN YOU SEEEEE BY THE DAWNS EARLY LIGHT..
  • In the third phase of the war the British decided to attack New Orleans to cut off American use of the Mississippi River which America used for trade and transportation. President James Madison sent Andrew Jackson to help command the American forces in 1815 which occurred after the war had ended. The U.S won with only 71 casualties and the British with 2,000 casualties.
  • The treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812 in the year 1814. One of the effects of the war was the increase in American patriotism which included the American heroes known as Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, and Commodore Perry. It also made westward settlement easier considering it weakened Native Americans resistance. This war also grew U.S manufacturing and also led to the Industrial Revolution because of the lack of trade which caused many to lose money and jobs.
