Oil painting had very bright pigment in the colors that's why in the 15 century it became popular because the Renaissance period portraits were very colorful.
Oil painting was very popular because the oils in the paintings gave a very realistic look, and gave specific effects. And the oil painting were done in areas with lots of artists and mostly dark, with a workspace.
The versatility of having a portrait of art done in oil paints showed a new artistic vision of early Renaissance painting.
