Storyboard Text

  • The other girls did not see anything happen to Persephone.  They continued to pick flowers in the field.  When they finished, they noticed that Persephone was missing.
  • Demeter wandered the earth looking for Persephone.  Her good friend Hecate gave her advice.  She said to ask Helios, the all-seeing sun god.
  • Demeter cried to Helios for help.  He finally told Demeter that Persephone had been taken by Hades into the underworld to marry her.
  • Demeter was very angry.  As the goddess of harvest and fertility, she made the earth dry up, harvests fail and plants lose their color.
  • Demeter found Persephone in the Underworld.   Demeter said if Persephone chose to live with Hades she would never again make the earth fertile.
  • Hades and Demeter came to an agreement.  Persephone will be in the underworld for six months and with Demeter for six months.  When Persephone is with Hades it is winter and fall because Demeter is sad that Persephone is not with her. When Persephone is with Demeter it is spring and summer.  This is why there are seasons.
