All starts in late november where their is a boy named Jonas, who looks nervous about what is going to happen in December. He lives in a community were all the people have really good jobs that are secure. Later Jonas and his parents have a private talk about the Ceremony of Twelve. When a kids turns 12, he or she will know what his job will be.
Jonas father brings a sick boy named Gabriel who is been treated, and says that has funny eyes. Later Jonas sits at his desk and thinks when he took an apple from his home to school. He remembered that he and Asher were playing catch with the apple when the apple suddenly changed.
At breakfast Jonas and his family have another talk about they telling their dreams. After the talk, his mother gave him some pills for those feelings called "stirrings". After he took the pill, he forgot all about the dream. The next day is the big day, the 1st day of the ceremonies, and all the friends of Jonas where nervous of what is going to be their job.
It's finally time for the ceremony of Twelve. Jonas and his friends line up in the order of the numbers they were given at their birth. Jonas is the number 19 so he's on the older side of the group. The Chief Elder gives a small speech before starting. She gives everyone an assignment until she gets to number 18 which is Fiona. The Chief finishes and so its Jonas turn but she skips Jonas and moves on to number 20 . Everyone noticed that she skipped Jonas, so people yelled . So then the Elder apolagizes because Jonas has been selected as The Receiver of Memory.
After the ceremony ended, all the new twelves had been given folders of the way of their training for their new jobs. That night Jonas open his folder and finds 1 sheet of paper. It's a list of Instructions to go and train with the Old Receiver after school.
Finally Jonas heads to the Annex for his training. The female attendant greets Jonas and unlocks the door to the receiver room. He sees the old receiver in a corner and greets him. The old receiver tells Jonas to feel free to ask as any questions as he wants and also that his job is to remember the memories of the past.
