founded in 1850s The Klu Klux Klan was a secret organized group of white protestant Americans, mainly from the south and they used extreme violence towards black people.
I fought for this country!
They were disbanded by the federal government in 1871, but reappeared in the early 1900s. They expanded their range to also hating Catholics and Jews. They also incorporated cross burnings into their ceremonies.
We don't want you here!
The popularity of the Klu Klux Klan was at it's height from 1924-1925, with roughly 3-6 million followers. There were quite a few Catholic and Jewish casualties, but there were thousands of African American deaths at the hands of the Klan.
The Klan would attack every African American, Catholic, and Jew that they could. They believed that they were "purifying" America by disposing of inferior religions and races.
The Klan left a horrible scar on American history and some people today still follow the bigoted and racist beliefs that the Klan supported.
However, the Klan has been mostly eradicated and everybody is a lot less ignorant than they were 90 years ago. Blacks, whites, Catholics, Jews, etc. have been living and will continue to live in equality so long as the Klan doesn't rear it's ugly head.
