  • Santiago Brings his sheep to town to sell his wool. While he is there he meets the merchants daughter.
  • One year passes and Santiago goes to see a dream interpreter.
  • Santiago's dream is of a boy playing with his sheep. Then the child grabs Santiago’s hands, transports him to the pyramids in Egypt, and tells him that he will find a treasure near them.
  • the dream interpreter says she will not charge him for her service, but that she wants ten percent of the treasure when he finds it. Santiago agrees, Then the dream interpreter goes on to insist that Santiago travel to the Pyramids and find the treasure.
  • Santiago is reading when an old man approaches him. He ignores the man, but the old man persistently questions Santiago about the book. During their conversation, the old man introduces himself as Melchizedek and says he is the King of Salem.
  • The old man said he would help Santiago for one-tenth of his sheep. Then Melchizedek gives Santiago two stones from the breastplate. He says the stones are called Urim and Thummim and they represent “yes” and “no.” They will help Santiago to read omens. Then Santiago crosses the water by ship.
