Tomiko and her family are sad after their mother's death.
As they are fleeing their home because of war, Tomiko and her sisters give their brother Nini an improper burial on the beach at Komesu.
Now alone, Tomiko saw many civilians as she wandered from cave to cave for shelter. Some nice, some mean. Some alive, some dead.
She was very afraid of soldiers and the war, but it was her determination to find her sisters that kept her going.
Tomiko finds a rabbit who she names after her dead brother, Nini. He saves her life by leading her away from a fire bomb.
Tomkio met a kind old couple in a cave who let her stay with them. The man was limbless and the women was blind.
Tomiko was done with the horrors of war and she wanted to die with them, but they wanted her to go on and find her family.
Tomiko walks out of the cave with a white flag in front of the soldiers. As she is surrendering, an American photographer takes a picture of her.
Later on, Tomiko finds her sisters.
