  • In 1789 the people of Paris stormed the Bastille: a symbol of royal power in France. The 'mob' believed that King Louis XVI, was about to suppress the recently formed national assembly or parliament.
  • Bread
  • Help
  • Liberty, Justice!
  • After much arguing the national assembly decided to execute King Louis and his wife Marie Antoinette.
  • Off with their heads!
  • Not the Guillotine!
  • The leader of the national assembly, Robespierre, was worried that Royalists were trying to stage a counter-revolution. So he executed anyone accused of being a traitor.
  • Traitors!
  • The other countries in Europe were worried that France's revolutionary spirit would spread. So they attacked France, planning to restore the monarchy. An inspirational general called Napoleon prevented this.
  • France is saved!
  • Napoleon returned to a hero's welcome and was made emperor of France.
  • I am Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte
  • Britain was France's main rival in Europe, so Napoleon began preparing to invade.
  • We will attack the British
