  • The Final Battle
  • The Aztecs had been infected by smallpox that had been brought by the Spanish. Within 5 months the Aztecs lost half of their population. Cuitlahuac had died after only 80 days in power. Cuauntemac succeded him.
  • Cortés returned with allies who were previously members of the triple alliance. The Aztec withstood a 75-day siege. But Cortés blocked off aqueducts which were sources of food and water. This caused many Aztecs to die from starvation and thirst. The Aztec then surrendered in 1521.
  • The Spanish then destroyed the city. They pulled down pyramids and temples, ripped down palaces and set houses on fire so no one could hide.
