When Mother Teresa was 55, she was presented the Degree of Praise by Pope Paul, her first formal award.
Then in 1979, she won the Nobel Peace prize.
Since her death in 1997, Mother Teresa's legacy has not been forgotten. In her lifetime she created 610 foundations in more than 120 countries in the world.
In 1971 she traveled to New York where she opened her first American charity. She provided aid to drug addicts, the homeless, unwed mothers, and anyone else who needed her help.

After staying in New York for about a year, she went to Lebanon to provide aid to Christian and Muslim children in Beirut.
