When the final Assignment was finished, everyone felt uneasy about the mistake. Jonas felt disappointed in himself, but was also confused as to why he was skipped.
"'He has shown all of the qualities that a Receiver must have'" (Lowry 78).
The Chief Elder notices the uneasiness and speaks up. She states, what everyone was thinking, that she made a mistake. She apologizes to the crowd, but specifically Jonas.
When Jonas gets to the stage, after being called up, the Chief Elder states that he hasn't been assigned, instead he was selected. He was selected to become the Receiver of Memories.
To had the community role of Receiver, you had to have five certain qualities. Jonas had all five of them, intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, and Capacity to See Beyond.
As he was looking at the crowd, it had changed, just like the apple had done. He then finally understood what Capacity to See Beyond meant.
The Chief Elder thanks him for his childhood, then walks off. The crowd begins to, loudly, chant Jonas's name. Jonas couldn't help, but feel fearful for what was to come.
"'JONAS. JONAS. JONAS'" (Lowry 81).
