  • The Bust of Pallas

  • Paraphrase is to express the meaning of using different words especially when trying to achieve great clarity. In the raven paraphrase is used when the narrator is grieving his wife's death.
  • Shift is changing from one mood to another within a sentence or paragraph. This is used when he is scared when something or someone knocks at the door. He is scared because he doesn't know what it is, but then he gets happy because he realizes that he can ask the bird questions and it will tell the truth.
  • The Bust of Pallas is a statue of a greek god, but it is only the shoulders up of the whole person. The Bust of Pallas is used in the story when the raven lands on it and tells the narrator the truth to his question. Which makes him angry because he says that he will never see his wife again
