  • Jonas is against the community when they decide to release Gabriel. Jonas takes him to Elsewhere when he feels his life is threatened.

  • Jonas receives more memories and becomes intelligent. He learns that release is death and not banishment and struggles to comprehend the idea of it.
  • Character vs. Nature
  • Jonas struggles to survive in the cold snow because of starvation, when he takes Gabriel to Elsewhere to escape from the community.
  • Importance of Memory
  • As Jonas undergoes his training, he learns that there is no pain without memory, there is also no true happiness.
  • Importance of the Individual
  • Jonas and his peers who join the ceremony of twelve mature into young adults, receive jobs, and understand the importance about their jobs and themselves.
  • Pain and Pleasure
  • The community cannot appreciate the joys in their lives because they have never felt pain. There is no pain without pleasure.
