The war at sea started with a British blockade of ships headed for Germany. British ships turned back any vessels carrying weapons, food, and other vital supplies for the Central powers. Even ships from neutral nations like the U.S.
On May 7, 1915, a U-boat from Germany sank the British liner Lusitania without warning. Among the 1,198 dead were 128 Americans. Germany tried blaming it by saying the ship was armed.
As Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife rode through Sarajevo, Bosnia, a terrorist launched a bomb at their car. But, the bomb bounced off the hood and the couple continued. Another terrorist, Gavrilo Princip fired several shots in the car and killed the couple. Within weeks, Austria declared war on Serbia and allies started to declare war on eachother.
