On July 2, 1925, Jesse and James Evers gave birth to Medgar Wiley Evers, in Decatur, Mississippi.
He had 3 siblings, Elizabeth, Charles and Ruth Evers, and Eva Lee.
He grew up in a Mississippi farming family, and was drafted into the U.S. Army at age 18.
After serving the war in World War 2, Medgar and his brother, Charles enrolled at Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College.
In 1946, the brothers tried to vote, but were threatened by 200 whites. They were prevented from voting in 1946, but could vote the next year.
In 1954, Medgar applied for entrance to the law school at the University of Mississippi. He was rejected because of race, so he then became the first field secretary of the Mississippi NAACP.
