From 1951-1963, Medgar was married to Myrlie Williams, who was a civil rights activist.

They had 3 children, James Van, Darell Kenyatta, and Reena Denise Evers.
On June 12, 1963, Medgar was shot in the back as he walked to the door of his home. Charges against his killer, Byron de la Beckwith, were dropped after two trials ended in hung juries.
Medgar was later honored with a military burial in Arlington National Cemetery, in May of 1964.
He will always be remembered as on of the greatest Civil Rights Activists ever to live, and he is greatly missed.
