  • Annie
  • AHHHHH!!
  • George Corell
  • I should be the mayor!
  • Mayor Orden
  • Your private anger was the beginning of a public anger.
  • Annie is one of the mayor's servants in the novel. She is the first to rebel against the invaders, as depicted in the image above. She was also very active in the rebellion and helped spread important information around the town. "No, I'm awful good at sneaking" and "Miss you better not tell him anything!" are both quotes that show how she was constantly involved in the rebellion and did all she could to help the cause. Courageous, sneaky, short tempered, trustworthy, and loyal are all good traits to describe Annie.
  • Colonel Lanser
  • George Corell was the traitor in the novel who sided with the Germans to help take over the town. He was a very hated man but still insisted on being the mayor because he believed the towns people needed an authority they could trust. Corell often gives Lanser his ideas: "I thought perhaps that Mayor Orden might step down now and--well, if I were to take over his office , it and the military would work very nicely together" and "Orden must be held against rebellion". Un-loyal, smart and untrustworthy are all good traits to describe George Corell.
  • Lieutenant Tonder
  • Mayor Orden is the town mayor and is one with his people. He thinks what his people think and believes what the people believe. Throughout the novel he played a big role in the rebellion. He believes in only doing what's right for the people of his town. Two quotes that truly show his morals are “A man who is good for anything ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying; he only ought to consider whether he is doing right or wrong.” and Herd men, followers of a leader, cannot do that, and so it is always the herd men who win battles and the free men who win wars.” Wise, caring, and brave are all good traits to describe Mayor Orden.
  • Alex Morden
  • Colonel Lanser is the leader of the German invaders. He is a respectable man with good morals but his job comes before what he believes in. He is an experienced soldier with bad memories of war. “Defeat is a momentary thing. A defeat doesn't last. We were defeated and now we attack. Defeat means nothing. Can't you understand that? Do you know what they are whispering behind doors?” and “I'm tired of people who have not been at war who know all about it.” are two quotes that show how experienced and wise he really is. Experienced, respectable and wise are good traits to describe Colonel Lanser.
  • Lieutenant Tonder was one of the younger, less experienced soldiers. He fantasized about his own death and women. His time in the town drew him crazy because the people's acts of rebellion scared him and he was lonely. His longing for a women ended up being the death of him when he was murdered by Molly Morden, whom he opened up to about his loneliness. "The flies have conquered the flypaper" and "I'm lonely to the point of illness. I'm lonely in the quiet and the hatred." These two quotes show Tonder's loneliness and his fear of the people. Sad, inexperienced, lonely, and desperate are all good traits to describe Tonder.
  • I just want love!
  • Alex Morden was a civilian who murdered Captain Bentick. He believed in his rights as a free man so when Loft was bossing him around in the coal mines, Alex attacked. Bentick intervened and was murdered. Alex was publicly executed for his actions. "I got mad at him. I guess I hit him hard." and "I'm not sorry. He told me to go to work--me, a free man!" These two quotes show Alex's short temper and his independence. Short-tempered, independent, and scared are three good traits to describe Alex Morden.
