Siddhartha Guatama was very rich and wealthy. He didn't know what suffering was and wanted to know very badly. He saw 3 men, dead, old & feeble and sick. He wanted to know what suffering was after he saw these men he asked his guard, but still had no idea.
He went out and left everything to find out what suffering was at the age of 29. He at 1 grain of rice a day, and hit himself to feel pain. He would meditate, he thought of the four noble truths unhappiness, pain, sickness, and death. He wanted to reach enlightenment.
He wanted to take the middle path. By living a neither luxurious nor harsh life. The middle path has 3 parts. You'll be free from pain & selfishness, and to reach enlightenment. Moral discipline, mental discipline and wisdom acting speaking controlling ones emotions.
