The dragon was slain with the help of Beowulf's only warrior who did not flee when the battle sounded as if Beowulf had lost. His name was Wiglaf and Beowulf appointed him as the next king.
Beowulf has been ruling Geatland for 50 years and now a dragon has been awoken and he knows he must conquer it for his kingdom's safety.
Beowulf is miserable because he feels it's his fault the dragon is attacking. He tells his men that he shall fight the dragon alone.
He stayed true to his word and fought the dragon alone. Fate was aginst him though and he was quickly in a disadvantage
Beowulf died of the dragon's bite, but his last requests were to have a huge funeral fire and then have his ashes sealed in a huge tower with the dragon's treasure. And all who saw the great tower knew it to be Beowulf's tower. He had earned his name in fame.
Beowulf had lived his life for fame, and in the end he had got what he desired. But living for one thing is not living. I believe the theme of this story is to enjoy life and the little things in life. Not everything needs to be big and dramatic to be important or significant.
