I worked on the Transcontinental Rail Road. It was hard work but I was able to provide money for my family. Mei’s was able to find work in a restaurant.
It was hard to assimilate like the Americans. We did not look like them. We did not dress like them and our culture was much different than ours. Because we were different, we were discriminated against.
I decided that there was a big opportunity in America where I could work hard and be able to provide food and stability to for many.
We packed up all of our belongings and boarded a ship for America. It was a long trip that took several weeks to cross the Pacific Ocean.
We landed in a city called California. It was very different than China.
The only jobs we could find were jobs that white Americans refused to accept.
