  • Gregory Johnson burned the US flag in a political demonstration during the 1984 Republican National Convention
  • He was convicted of the desecration of a venerated object in violation of Texas Penal Code, sentenced to 1 year in prison, & fined $1,000.
  • NOT FREAKING FAIR
  • He is guilty of burning a flag and violating Texas Penal Code!
  • Johnson appealed to multiple courts, pleading that he had the right to burn the flag. Eventually leading to the US Supreme Court
  • The 1st Amendment protects my right!
  • For the US Supreme Court, it went down as a very controversial 5-4 decision. The Court found that "Under the circumstances, Johnson's burning of the flag constituted expressive conduct, permitting him to invoke the First Amendment. ...
  • I just got away with burning a flag!
  • Johnson continued to get arrested and protest for a multitude of reasons/causes. In June 2016 he burned another flag at a Republican Convention, and got arrested for it.... again
