Pyramus and Thisbe live in the ancient city of Babylon, where their families have been neighbors all their lives. As they grow up, they fall totally in love.
Unfortunately, their families hate each other and forbid the two to get married.
So they talk to each other through a crack in the wall that separates their houses. Eventually, they decide to run away together.
Thisbe arrives at the mulberry tree first. While she waits for Pyaramus, a lioness comes by with her mouth all covered in blood from a recent kill. Thisbe runs away so fast that she leaves her shawl behind under the mulberry tree. The lioness doesn't harm Thisbe, but tears up the shawl with her bloody jaws.
Finally, Pyramus shows up. He sees the lioness and the bloody shawl and assumes that the love of his life has been devoured. Overcome with grief, Pyramus stabs himself in the heart with his sword.
By the time Thisbe comes back, Pyramus has almost bled to death. The very last thing he sees before he dies is the beautiful face of Thisbe. Thisbe is so sad when she figures out what happened that she takes Pyramus's sword and kills herself, too. Their blood spurts onto the white berries of the mulberry tree. To this day, the all mulberries are stained red in honor of the tragic love of Pyramus and Thisbe.
