The soldiers shelter was a major problem during the war they had small tents that can only have one or two soldiers in them during the raining months the tents couldn't keep them dry and during winter months they had a bigger tent and a small fire place to keep them warm when they got cold
Through out the war food was something that was constantly in demand with the soldiers, as the Northerners had a variety of different foods to eat such as salted pork, rare occasions fresh beef, and powdered bread. The Southerners had a variety of foods as they were able to have coffee, meat, vegetables, bacon and rice.
The life a soldier was not the greatest. They faced many months away from family and loved ones, long hours of drilling, sometimes faced times with no food or shelter, many diseases that caused death among the soldiers, faced many terrible experiences on the battlefield. Had trouble with discipline, long hours of work in hot, cold, or rainy conditions.
Most of the battles were fought in the South which allowed the North to be able to keep moving deeper into Southern territory. However many of the major battles were fought in the Northern territories such as the Battle of Gettysburg which was a major turning point of the war.
The North was more industrialized than the South which cause the North to be able to gain an advantage over the South. The North had more railroads which allowed them to transport supplies around quicker and keep the troops in good shape. Also since the North had more factories they were better equipped for the war, however the South had a better amount of food since they had all the farms.
Sickness was a powerful thing that affected both sides of the war. More people died because of disease than they did in battle. Many men died on both sides without firing a single shot in battle. For every four deaths in the civil war three of them were from disease and infection and one was from battle wounds.
