It is 1942 and Tom is leaving his wife and critically ill son to serve in the British Air Force for the war.
He is worried about his son, and confides in his Commanding Officer, who promises him that he will see his son again.
Sadly, Tom's son dies from his illness before he leaves to fight in the war as a pilot, and his wife leaves him.
Grief-stricken, Tom heads back to the Air Force base, with a newfound passion to fight the war, thinking he has nothing more to lose.
Tom pilots his Bomber well, with the help of his Commanding Officer and crew. They are shot down in the German forest, leaving the Commanding Officer alive, Tom alive but badly injured, and all the other crew dead.
Tom's Commanding Officer fulfills his promise, seeing Tom in agony, and mercy-kills him, allowing him to "see" his son in heaven.
