Storyboard Text

  • Flashback
  • "Seated now on the woodpile in Betsy Johnson's cellar, Millicent knew that she had come triumphant through the trial of fire, the searing period of the ego which could end in two kinds of victory for her" (Plath,9)
  • Simili
  • "The basement room was dark and warm, like the inside of a sealed jar, Millicent thought, her eyes getting used to the strange dimness."(Plath,1)
  • Simili
  • "...with the lights clear, and the air like honey." (Plath,3)
  • This quote shows how Millicent moves from talking about the past to the present in such a short time. Also keeps the intensity that she hasn't turned the sorority down yet. Then in the end it ties into thetheme of her coming to her own desicion.
  • Symbol
  • This quote gives the reader a sense of what Millicent is going through, before the final decision she has to make. She notices more of the little things about the room when she has a lot of time by herself to think. Then it moves the story along to the flashback.
  • Imagery
  • "How she had proved something to herself by going through everything, even Rat Court, and then deciding not to join the sorority after all." (Plath,9)
  • Millicent says this to show how the air is thick around her. Also that she is focused, and surrounded by the choices she has to make. Then it also shows how she feels before the final of Rat Court.
  • Character
  • "Get up, gopher." (Plath, 5)
  • In this statement that Millicent makes it shows that you don't need to conform to be like the others. Being you is more important than changing who you are. So she showed how important her individuality is to her.
  • "..Millicent thought of the heather birds. Swooping carefree over the moors, they would go singing and crying out across the great spaces of air, dipping and darting, strong and proud in their freedom and their something loneliness. (Plath, 9)
  • Bev is a character that was harsh and cruel towards Millicent, and this showed a main challenge she had to go through. She had to keep a strong hold on herself to not let the hurtful words of others hurt her. It added to the main theme of the story on how she kept to being herself even through the harshness of life.
