Storyboard Text

  • This is the story of child named John. He grew up on a farm with his parents and 4 siblings near the village of Cornwall.
  • When he six years old, his parents sent him to work in a textile factory as an apprentice in Lancashire, a common example of urbanization.
  • When he arrived, he was shown to his tenement that he shared along with another apprentice.
  • The work conditions were deplorable. He worked long hours with few breaks. The dust from cotton fibers caused him to develop a severe cough.
  • Child labor led to many deaths. Fingers, arms, and legs could get caught in the machinery leading to life-threatening injuries resulting in mass graves.The dangers continued with little change.
  • The hours were long with short breaks. Food was scare and terrible. He was constantly watched by his supervisor who would beat him if he worked to slowly or made any mistakes.
